Free exhibitions

On top of the free Wednesdays, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen now offers free exhibitions as well. On September 27th, the museum presented its completely renovated entrance area. Leading designers have created a transition area where art blends with everyday reality. In addition to a new museum shop and an espresso bar, there are also exhibitions on show, for instance in the Willem van der Vorm gallery. This autumn, Shirana Shahbazi is the first show her work here and Sgraffito in 3D will open October 25th. The entire entrance area is open to everyone free of charge.

For the first time museum objects have been subjected to 3D industrial reconstruction techniques. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents the wonderful Van Beuningen-De Vriese collection of sgraffito earthenware in a truly novel fashion. The artist Joachim Rotteveel has developed a new manner of scanning, archiving and making 3D reconstructions of the earthenware. Until 18 January 2009
The internationally active visual artist Shirana Shahbazi (b. Iran, 1974) has this week been putting the finishing touches to the construction of her ‘Still Life with Shells’ installation in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen remodelled entrance foyer. She stages and rearranges still lifes, which she photographs and subsequently translates into paintings and installations. Setting these still lifes against a striking background gives them a contemporary twist that has a startling impact. READ ON...

Images of Erasmus

8 November 2008 – 8 February 2009
Five hundred years after Erasmus wrote The Praise of Folly—one of the most influential books of all time—the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents a major Erasmus exhibition. The Louvre has agreed, exceptionally, to loan the superb portrait by Hans Holbein the Younger. Works of art never seen before in the Netherlands are coming from around the world, from cities like New York, London and Madrid. The paintings, drawings, prints and objects throw light on Erasmus’s ideas and illustrate his influence on the arts and on society. READ ON...
