Intervention #10 Tobias Putrih & MOS
16 May 2009 to 11 October 2009
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s Intervention #10 is a new work by Tobias Putrih (Slovenia, 1972) and marks the artist’s Dutch debut. The installation is a collaboration with MOS architects Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample. It reflects their shared interest in dynamic and modular building systems and explores the barriers between artistic and architectural practice.
Tobias Putrih designs art works that occupy a position between art and architecture. Through a simple structure and great efficiency of means he creates a transition from nature to architecture. The project is based on using simple building techniques and integrating them within a more complex social and building environment. Starting with the idea of a primitive arch, Putrih and MOS have designed a polystyrene and plywood structure.
The starting point for Intervention #10 is Putrih’s interest in the architecture of subtraction in the spaces created within hollowed-out rocks and MOS’ research into heap structures. The architecture of the installation relates to both these in interests. Pieces of polystyrene protrude through a plywood grid, forming a sturdy structure. The exterior and interior are rough like brick. The internal chamber can be accessed via two side openings in the installation.
The main goal of the project for Intervention #10 was to find a common ground between artistic and architectural practice. This is Putrih’s and MOS’s in second collaboration. Their first project is still on show at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, England. Putrih and the MOS architects achieved the final result by focusing on structural and tectonic problems.
Tobias Putrih & MOS
Putrih studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana and at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He represented Slovenia at the Venice Biennale in 2007. This installation at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is his first exhibition in the Netherlands. He lives and works in New York, Boston and Ljubljana. MOS is a collective of designers and architects. The two principals, Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample, teach at Harvard University and Yale University while maintaining the practice.
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen gives a prominent position to contemporary art through a series of presentations that reflect upon the building and the collection. These interventions establish a dialogue with works from the collection, thus focusing visitors’ attention and stimulating the imagination. Intervention #10 by Tobias Putrih & MOS can be seen in the displays of The Collection Two.
