This summer Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is showing a selection of linocuts from Lubok 11. This artists’ book, with more than ninety linocuts, is a joint venture between Lubok Verlag of Leipzig and PrintRoom of Rotterdam. It is a group exhibition in book form.
Lubok Verlag was founded by the artist Christoph Ruckhäberle. Lubok 11 is one of a series of publications printed from original linocuts, reproduced on a mechanical letterpress. The craftsmanship of the linocut is preserved in the end product. Lubok 11 was compiled by Christoph Ruckhäberle, Ewoud van Rijn and Karin de Jong.
Lubok 11 contains contributions from twelve artists:
Marcel van Eeden
Ewoud van Rijn
Jasper Sebastian Stürup
Ewoud van Rijn and Sebastian Gögel are also represented in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s collection of contemporary drawings. The surreal quality of drawings is key to the museum’s current collecting policy. The same quality is found in the Lubok series; unafraid of experimentation, it focuses on the artificial parallel worlds of the artists. A selection of individual pages of linocuts from the publication can be seen in two display cases in the museum.
Outstanding prints for a wide audience
The name Lubok is an allusion to cheap popular prints from Russia. Lubok Verlag aspires to make high-quality prints available to a mass market. This chimes with the mission of PrintRoom and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen to open up the enjoyment of artists’ books to a wide readership. The collaboration between Rotterdam-based PrintRoom and Lubok Verlag began last year with an exhibition of all the Lubok publications. It was then that the idea of putting together a joint edition of the Lubok series with contributions from Dutch and foreign artists took shape.
Karin de Jong is the founder of PrintRoom, an exhibition space and shop in Rotterdam devoted to artists’ books. The initiative began in 2003 as an expanding travelling collection. At the end of 2010 PrintRoom moved to premises in the centre of Rotterdam with a shop, a varied programme for the public and, since 2012, a workshop. www.printroom.org
