Intervention #22 Tanja Smeets - Domestic Strangers
9 February 2013 - 26 January 2014

This spring, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will be exhibiting four new installations by Tanja Smeets (1963). Large organic structures, made from dozens of red coffee cups and porcelain Chinese spoons, have taken over the four Clover Leaf galleries, at the heart of the museum.

In the exhibition ‘Domestic Strangers’, Tanja Smeets combines everyday materials with ceramics. Ceramic elfish benches grow from a pile of cups, porcelain spoons hang in bunches next to each other, and ceramic shapes based on flowers and plants flow from a sieve. A white shape, composed of thousands of plastic elements, escapes from the room and pours into the museum. Smeets produced these works during her time at the European Ceramics Work Centre - sundaymorning@ekwc in Den Bosch and is exhibiting them in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen for the first time.

Uncontrollable growth processes
Tanja Smeets chooses her materials on the basis of colour, structure and shape. She connects or groups these materials into large organic structures that seem to be the result of a natural growth process: they infiltrate the environment in which they find themselves and suggest they have always been there. The tension that arises between this matter-of-fact presence on the one hand and the imminent danger of a growing organism on the other, is important in the work of Tanja Smeets.

Tanja Smeets
Tanja Smeets (Wijchen, 1963) had a solo exhibition in 2010 in Museum Gouda and recently exhibited her work in the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. In 2011 she participated in the Gyeonggi International CeraMIX Biennale in South Korea and the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent. Tanja Smeets has worked on commissions for the Dutch Government Buildings Agency, Amsterdam Fund for the Art, SKOR and various Dutch municipalities. Her work has been included in the museum collection and in the collections of the TextielMuseum, AkzoNobel and DSM.

The publication ‘Domestic Strangers’ will appear on 24 February 2013 to mark the occasion of the exhibition.

‘Intervention # 22 Tanja Smeets - Domestic Strangers’ was made possible partly thanks to HEMA, Mondriaan Fund, sundaymorning@ekwc and Attema, Chris van den Berg DOK constructions.
