EVERYTHING IS LOCAL, Landscape 1
9 March - 26 May 2013
Belgian artist Christophe Coppens opens his first exhibition on 9 March 2013 in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
Christophe Coppens (b. Belgium, 1969) worked as an accessories designer for 21 years, under his own label as well as for other designers. On 5 May 2012 he decided to close his business and discontinue all his activities in the realm of fashion. His most personal reason for doing this was the dilemma between fashion and art that he felt for many years.
"You can’t be a good artist with the mentality of a fashion designer,” Coppens explains. “And I didn’t succeed at being a part-time artist.”
His first work as a “full-time artist” is “EVERYTHING IS LOCAL, Landscape 1”, a work commissioned by the H+F Fashion on the Edge initiative. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has the honour of presenting this work to the public for the very first time.
H+F Fashion on the Edge
H+F Fashion on the Edge, an initiative from Han Nefkens and José Teunissen in collaboration with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, focuses on the edge of fashion and the visual arts. H+F Fashion on the Edge was set up in 2006 and has since invested in the development of dresses and installations by Viktor & Rolf, Hussein Chalayan and many others. As part of the H+F Collection, these pieces have been given to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen on long-term loan.
Design in Boijmans
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is the leading museum in the Netherlands where national and international design talent are given a platform. Special exhibitions are organised as part of the ‘Design in Boijmans’ programme. In the spring of 2013, the museum will be spotlighting craft during the major exhibition ‘Hand Made: Long live crafts’. It will include a wide range of examples of arts and crafts from the past and present, demonstrations by craftsmen, countless workshops and Hand Made markets. In addition, there will be several new up-to-date exhibitions presented in the Design Columns series and the new layout of the design collection will be unveiled. In 2014 the museum will present the sequel to its 2009 exhibition The Art of Fashion. This exhibition will also be organised in association with H+F Fashion on the Edge.
