Intervention #19 Frans Dijkmeijer
A Life in Weaving
From June 2 2012

The Dutch textile designer Frans Dijkmeijer (1936-2011) is known for his timeless and original fabric designs. From 1966 to 1980, Dijkmeijer worked at De Ploeg weaving mill. Currently, his fabrics are produced by renowned companies such as the Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat. In 2012, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen offers the visitor a glimpse of the important developments in Dijkmeijer’s oeuvre.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is devoting an exhibition to the fabrics of the Dutch textile designer Frans Dijkmeijer (1936). Dijkmeijer’s fabrics are used for furniture upholstery and interior decoration and are still very popular among international furniture designers. Designer Bertjan Pot (1975) is supervising the fitting out of the exhibition, where the important design choices made by Frans Dijkmeijer are illustrated using material swatches, photos and video interviews.

Textile innovation
The fabrics of Frans Dijkmeijer are the result of a systematic investigation into the possibilities of the loom. Original and unusual combinations of thread and weave give rise to new structures that, despite the apparent simplicity, often possess an extreme technical complexity. The exhibition features video interviews in which the fabric designer in shown in his studio, talking about the origins of his designs and the choices he makes. Fabric swatches from his personal archive illustrate the various steps in this process. In addition, detailed photographs are on display, which reveal the structures of the fabrics. A long sofa upholstered in a variety of Frans Dijkmeijer fabrics gives the visitor not only the possibility of viewing the fabrics, but also of experiencing their quality by touching them.
