Han Nefkens
10 Years of Patronage
25 June – 16 October 2011

Han Nefkens is a writer, art collector, patron and an inspired initiator of contemporary art projects. This summer Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents a catalogue and accompanying  exhibition about Nefkens’ first ten years of patronage. Nefkens: ‘It is important that patrons come out and set an example’.

This summer Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen looks back over the first ten years of Han Nefkens’ patronage with the presentation of a special catalogue and exhibition in the Willem van der Vorm gallery. In order to share his art collection and his vision with the general public Nefkens has established partnerships with various museums and art institutions in the Netherlands and abroad. The catalogue ‘Han Nefkens - 10 Years of Patronage’ explores the seven pillars of Han Nefkens’ activities: H+F Collection, H+F Curatorial Grant, ArtAids, H+F Patronage, H+F Fashion on the Edge, Fundació Han Nefkens and Han Nefkens’ writing. The publication provides a chronological overview of the past ten years with texts by Han Nefkens and images of approximately 500 works from his collection. The accompanying exhibition includes videos that demonstrate the importance of private patronage.

H+F Collection
In addition to the exhibition in the Willem van der Vorm gallery, a selection of works from Han Nefkens’ collection of contemporary art will be displayed throughout the museum at various points during the summer. The displays will include works by Desiree Dolron, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Jeff Wall, Ryan Gander and Shirana Shahbazi.

Han Nefkens and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
The partnership between Han Nefkens and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has resulted in a variety of exhibitions, interventions, commissions and acquisitions. For example, the permanent installation ‘Laat je haar neer / Let Your Hair Down’ by video artist Pipilotti Rist in the museum’s entrance area was realised with Han Nefkens’ support. In 2010 Nefkens announced that he would renew his association with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen until 2015 through his initiative Fashion on the Edge.

Like the catalogue, the exhibition is constructed around the seven H+F pillars and gives an impression of the diversity of Han Nefkens’ activities. The exhibition includes videos in which artists, designers and curators talk about the opportunities H+F has afforded them. There is also an interview with Han Nefkens by the journalist and presenter Hanneke Groenteman.

In addition to images illustrating the seven pillars of Han Nefkens’ patronage and his own writings, the catalogue also contains a personal interview with the journalist Ingrid Harms in which Nefkens talks about his passion for contemporary art and his desire to share his art and his passion with others. The catalogue ‘Han Nefkens - 10 Years of Patronage’ and the accompanying exhibition have been designed by the visual artist Milou van Ham in association with Steffen Maas. The catalogue will be available from the museum shop and webshop  from the end of June and is distributed by Uitgeverij Atlas.
