New visitors for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in 2009
17 September 2009

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has had a wonderful year. Exhibitions of the video artist Pipilotti Rist, The Art of Fashion and the Rotterdam Design Prize 2009 attracted large numbers of visitors. Furthermore, the museum has been successful in attracting many new young visitors. Taking in to account the rush of visitors to the current exhibitions, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is heading towards a total visitor figure of 225,000 for 2009, far in excess of its goal of 185,000.

New visitors
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen had no less than 40% more young visitors than in 2008. The number of visitors until 18 years increased from 29,000 to 41,000 (figures until half of December). Several projects led to an increase in visitors in their twenties and thirties. Pipilotti Rist's exhibition Elixir was a magnet for young visitors and The Art of Fashion attracted many fashionistas who were visiting the museum for the first time. The launch of the video channel ArtTube also helped to bring the museum to the attention of new visitors.
Another highpoint that attracted a great deal of public attention was the acquisition of a family portrait by Max Beckmann: one of only two monumental canvases from Beckmann's period of exile in a Dutch public collection. One in five visitors came from abroad, attracted by exhibitions such as Brazil Contemporary and The Art of Fashion.

A taste of what's to come
The programme for 2010 kicks off with the exhibition Divided Divided by Carsten Höller, including the Revolving Hotel Room, a hotel room for two in the museum. Atelier Van Lieshout follows in the summer with an exhibition in a submarine hangar in Rotterdam's docklands, while the Bodon gallery will be transformed into an installation of water reflections by Olafur Eliasson. During 2010 a large part of the museum's collection will be displayed in the Kunsthal Rotterdam under the title Inside Out. In September we will be opening our major autumn show: a retrospective of Kees van Dongen. The museum will also be given a fixed spot on TV Rijnmond with the programme Boijmans Journaal.

Last chance
You can still visit the exhibitions The Art of Fashion and the Rotterdam Design Prize until 10 January 2010.
