Rotterdam Art Weekend – a feast of contemporary art

This weekend, 7-9 June, there is a wealth of contemporary art in Rotterdam. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Submarine Wharf, TENT, AVL-Mundo and Route du Nord ensure an inspiring weekend with openings of major exhibitions and other art events.

In the middle of the art summer of 2013 with Art Basel and the Venice Biennale, this weekend Rotterdam is also devoted to contemporary art. The weekend kicks off on Friday 7 June in TENT with the event ‘Less is More, More or Less’. On the same afternoon Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is organising a symposium about the exhibition ‘XXXL Painting’ in the Submarine Wharf in Rotterdam’s docklands. On Saturday 8 June there are three openings in the museum followed in the evening by openings in the Submarine Wharf and AVL-Mundo (founded by artist Joep van Lieshout) on the north bank of the River Maas. And with ‘Route du Nord’ Rotterdam Noord will provide the lively backdrop for new art, music and literature throughout the weekend.

Less is More, More or Less in TENT
In association with the CBK, on Friday 7 June TENT presents a daylong symposium on collecting and de-accessioning art in the public realm in Rotterdam.

Symposium XXXL Painting
On Friday afternoon Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is organising a symposium about the work of painters Klaas Kloosterboer, Chris Martin and Jim Shaw, in the presence of the artists and curators of the exhibition. Followed by an exclusive preview of the exhibition in the Submarine Wharf.

Openings of summer exhibitions in Boijmans and Submarine Wharf
On Saturday afternoon the museum opens three exhibitions including a major exhibition to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the City Collection. With work by renowned artists and designers from Rotterdam, such as Atelier Van Lieshout, Lara Almarcegui, Hella Jongerius and Bertjan Pot. With his site-specific installation Oscar Tuazon initiates ‘Sensory Spaces’, a new series of solo exhibitions by leading international contemporary artists. And to honour the artists’ publication ‘Lubok 11’ there is also the opening of a display of linocuts. In the evening there is the official opening of the exhibition ‘XXXL Painting’ in the Submarine Wharf, a 20-minute boat journey from the museum, with an extensive programme including musical performances. and

Opening of ‘Territory’ at AVL-Mundo
Saturday night also sees the opening of ‘Territory’, the first exhibition at AVL-Mundo in Rotterdam’s docklands haven. An unsettling and boundary-breaking exhibition with work by Itziar Okariz (SP), Philippe Meste (FR), Erik van Lieshout, Kevin van Braak and Atelier Van Lieshout.

Route du Nord
Rotterdam Noord hosts three days of new art, music and literature with the eleventh edition of Route du Nord. Well-known names and new talent present their latest works in this exciting neighbourhood.
