Five museums in the Netherlands and Flanders launch the online video channel ARTtube

The website ARTtube, a collective video channel for art and design in the Netherlands and Belgium, was launched on July 5. The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, M HKA in Antwerp, Gemeentemuseum The Hague, De Pont in Tilburg and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam will now be publishing videos on ARTtube about art and design. The videos, which are all in high quality, will generally be produced by the museums themselves, based on their own expertise. ARTtube has been made possible by SNS REAAL Fund.

Exceptional content
The website includes exceptional interviews with reputable artists and designers, plus fascinating portraits of inspirational makers. The museums offer a peep behind the scenes - for example, setting up an exhibition or restoring works of art - and also give the word to curators and restorers. Fiction and experimentation are also included, for example in the Boijmans TV series and in a number of unusual animation and remix films.

Boijmans and ARTtube
Since 2009, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has produced more than 200 videos about its exhibitions and collection. These have been shown both in the museum and online. Online visitors will be able to enjoy all these existing videos on the renewed ARTtube channel. In addition there are new productions such as the animation video entitled ‘Why is it so quiet here?’ by Jan Rothuizen. This film views a visit to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen through the eyes of the artist and reveals the thoughts that go through his head. Jan Rothuizen is a cartoonist, known for his work for publications such as De Volkskrant, in which he captures in exceptional detail his observations of a particular place in both text and image. ‘Why is it so quiet here?’ is his first animation film. ARTtube also shows the video about everything leading up to the exhibition ‘Ballads’ by Sarkis in the Submarine Wharf (which can be visited until 30 September). Director Sjarel Ex is enthusiastic about the new ARTtube: ‘We are pleased that our platform is such a success and that we can now, thanks to the SNS REAAL Fund, expand it further together with four other museums.’

ARTtube is bilingual; in other words, most of the videos are also available in English. In this way, the international visitor can learn online more about the Dutch and Belgian museums and their collections and ARTtube will contribute to the international allure and visibility of art and design from the Low Countries.

Ready for growth
The five museums will develop ARTtube further in the coming years. The ambition is to attract half a million visitors per year by 2014. The museums are going to approach this public in a variety of ways: via website, social media, digital television and screens in the public space. The museum sector will thus use its expertise in the area of art and education for both online TV and video.

ARTtube has been developed by Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen since 2009 with support from the VSBfonds, partner in education to the museum. The concept and brand for this first version of the project was developed in collaboration with Fabrique.

The new identity and housestyle of ARTtube has been produced by Thonik. The interactive concept, design and technique for the website has been developed by the Rotterdam company Zicht online.
