Successful Johan Thorn Prikker exhibition travels to Düsseldorf
From 25 March 2011 the exhibition ‘Johan Thorn Prikker – Beyond Art Nouveau’ will be shown at the Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf. The German museum is Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s partner for this exhibition. The majority of the works on display in Rotterdam until 13 February will travel on to Düsseldorf . Another of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s successful exhibitions – ‘All Eyes on Kees van Dongen’ – is travelling abroad. It can be seen at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Villa de Paris from 25 March.
More than 150 works by Johan Thorn Prikker will travel to the Museum Kunst Palast, where the exhibition will be shown under the title ‘Johan Thorn Prikker. Mit allen Regeln der Kunst. Vom Jugendstil zur Abstraktion’ from 26 March to 7 August 2011. The exhibition will have the same design in Germany. However, Museum Kunst Palast houses several beautiful monumental works by the artist, which will form a special addition to the exhibition. Johan Thorn Prikker’s early work is unknown in Germany and will come as something of a surprise to German visitors.
The Thorn Prikker exhibition – with more than 200 masterpieces – has been a great success in Rotterdam. The works have come from more than twenty museums, including the Kröller-Müller Museum, The Gemeentemuseum in The Hague and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Museum in Krefeld, and private collections in the Netherlands and Germany. The exhibition has been an eye-opener for many visitors. The display of stained glass, watercolours, furniture, wall paintings and carpets has so far attracted more than 150.000 visitors to the museum. This first major retrospective of the work of one of the leading designers of the early twentieth century demonstrates that Johan Thorn Prikker was more than just an Art Nouveau designer. He was one of the first Dutch modern artists to gain an international reputation.
The exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was co-curated by Thorn Prikker expert, Christiane Heiser. She will also be closely involved in the installation of the exhibition in Düsseldorf. The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue with essays by twelve specialists from the Netherlands, Germany and Canada. The catalogue has been co-published with Museum Kunst Palast and is available in Dutch and German.
The first part of the symposium ‘Crossing Borders. Johan Thorn Prikker and European Modernism’ was held at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen on 28 January. The second part will be held on 8 April at Museum Kunst Palast. The symposium focuses on the exchange of knowledge of the arts between the Netherlands and Germany at the beginning of the twentieth century and Thorn Prikker’s role in this.
The exhibition has been organised in partnership with Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf and has been made possible with the support of the BankGiro Loterij, SNS REAAL Fonds, K.F. Hein Fonds, Stichting Elise Mathilde Fonds, Stichting Bevordering van Volkskracht. It is part of the official programme of Holland Art Cities 2010-2011.
